In an effort to end the decade-old insurgency and establish lasting peace in Nepal, the Girija Prasad Koirala government has said it would soon initiate a dialogue with the Maoists on the basis of an agreement and code of conduct acceptable to both parties.
"Realising the people's wish to see durable peace in the country, the present government would soon initiate a dialogue with the Maoists on the basis of an agreement and a code of conduct acceptable to both parties," Home Minister Krishna Sitoula said at a function in Kathmandu on Saturday.
The present government would not "spill the blood" of any more people on political issues, he stressed.
The present government's main responsibility towards the country and its people was to hold talks with the Maoists and prepare for constituent assembly elections as per the 12-point understanding reached with the rebels, he said.
Responding to a question regarding the government's capability to maintain law and order, the minister said the government was committed and able to tackle attempts to create disorder in any part of the country.
He also said that the direct talks between the government and the Maoists would yield results at the earliest.
