MEMBERS OF North Eastern Railway Mazdoor Union (NERMU) took out a silent procession to commemorate the martyrdom of Jeevanand and Sukhu who were killed in the police firing during the railway employees’ strike in 1952. Waiving placards and banners, the procession which started from the account office, culminated into a meeting at the railway magistrate’s office where both employees had breathed their last.

Paying tributes to Jeevanand and Sukhu, secretary of NERMU KL Gupta said that they sacrificed their lives for the genuine demands of the employees and the employees would take a lesson from their sacrifice. He further said that since 1952, the organisation of any programme at the place was prohibited and various freedom fighters were arrested from the site at which they were paying tributes to the martyrs.
Recalling their names, KL Gupta said Prof Shibban Lal Saxena, Madhukar Vinayak, Genda Singh, Mukut Bihari and Seth Damodar Swaroop were among those who were arrested from the site. Joint secretary of the union Diwaker Mishra, Naveen Kumar Mishra and many other leaders also paid tributes and recalled that on the day they died, the entire city was mourning their death .
