A high-level team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) led by its acting chairperson reached Kerala on Thursday to conduct an inquiry into the mass suicide bid at SAI centre in Alappuzha two weeks back in which a minor girl had died.
During the two-day visit the team will meet three survivors and question some of the senior sportspersons allegedly named by the victims in their suicide note. It would also meet SAI officials and trainers to get first-hand information.
SAI’s water sports centre had hit headlines after the suicide bid of four minor girls alleging harassment and ragging at the hostel on May 6. They had all consumed a highly toxic fruit and one of them, Aparna Ramabhadran (15) died at the hospital later.
Earlier the NHRC had sent notices to state chief secretary, Alappuzha district collector, police superintendent and SAI director general to send a detailed report in two weeks.
Though the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has announced a compensation and job to Aparna’s mother, her family refused to accept it alleging a big cover-up. Aparna’s mother has sought a CBI inquiry into the incident that brought enough strictures to the premier athletic training body of the country.
Meanwhile opposition leader VS Achuthanandan visited the house of the deceased and sought a detailed probe into the incident.
