The wife of yesteryear actor Naveen Nischol committed suicide at the Nischols’ residence in Mahim on Saturday.
Naveen found Geetanjali, 48, hanging from the ceiling fan in their bedroom when he returned after visiting his sister in Prabhadevi about 8.30 pm. The police recovered a suicide note from the spot.
“The note says Geetanjali committed suicide out of frustration due to family problems and constants fights with her husband,” said inspector A.R. Mulani of the Mahim police station, who is investigating the case.
“According to us, it is a case of suicide. But we have called Nischol, the servants present in the house at the time, and Geetanjali’s brother for questioning. We have recorded their statements,” he said.
The Nischols were in the news a few months ago after Naveen’s producer brother Praveen threw them out of his house, which the actor claimed had been purchased with his own money.
The couple had moved into Geetanjali’s brother’s two-bedroom Mahim flat after that.
The police have sent the suicide note to handwriting experts to ascertain if it was genuine.
Asked whether Naveen’s addiction to alcohol could be the cause of his wife’s suicide, Mulani said: “This could have been a reason. But investigations are in the primary stage and it will be difficult to comment at the moment.”
