His wife, Ruchi, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her DLF Phase-2 residence in July last year.

While rejecting the bail plea, a division bench of justices BS Chauhan and Jagdish Singh Kehar asked the prosecution to expedite the hearing in the case.

The couple had a love marriage in 2005. Sumit was allegedly having an affair with model and actor Meera Chopra.

“The court also observed that Sumit can file a fresh appeal for bail only after all the witnesses in the case are verified,” said Rishi Malhotra, lawyer for Sudha Gupta — Ruchi’s mother and the complainant in the case.

Sumit faces charges under Sections 304 (b) (dowry death), 302 (murder), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had rejected Sumit’s bail plea in March this year while a local court in Gurgaon had turned down his appeal in October last year.
