Admitting that 'serious deficiency' in construction design at a Delhi Metro site led to a recent fatal mishap, Government on Tuesday assured Parliament there would be no compromise on safety for the sake of Commonwealth Games.
"Safety is not being compromised. Commonwealth Games is no doubt a big event. They (project) would have been built even without the Commonwealth Games," Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy told the Rajya Sabha.
Seeking to allay apprehensions of members that the project was being speeded up to meet the 2010 Commonwealth Games deadline, he said "we have enough cushion to complete the projects in time."
In identical statements in both Houses, Reddy said that following an enquiry into the accident, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken 'very serious steps' including issue of show cause notice to construction firm Gammon India for blacklisting.
The design consultancy firm, Arch Consultancy Services, has already been blacklisted for five years, while structural consultant Tandon Consultants is being debarred for two years for not giving correct advice to DMRC on the defective pier in South Delhi.
