"So far we have received no official communication from Bangladesh police regarding the arrest of Abdul Rauf Merchant," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria told PTI.

Merchant, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Kumar in 1997, has been reportedly arrested in Bangladesh nearly a week after he went missing while on furlough.

"It is confirmed that there are some persons arrested in Dhaka but the verification of the identity of the persons is still on," Maria said.

The Bombay High Court released merchant, a resident of Mumbra, on furlough for 14 days last month on condition that he would report to police every day.

He reported for a week but thereafter stopped coming to Mumbra police station, Mumbai police had said on May 23.
