The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the MCD to file an affidavit giving an undertaking that there would be no system of contract teachers in any of its 1,784 schools beyond June 2006.
The court also asked the MCD to file a status report on the number of vacancies in the corporation-run schools and posted the matter for further hearing to April 27.
Justice Pradeep Nandrajog passed the orders while dealing with a PIL filed by a voluntary organisation 'Social Jurists' through its counsel Ashok Agarwal complaining that there were about 5000 vacancies in the MCD schools resulting in the academic work getting badly disrupted.
The petition alleged that the corporation instead of filling up the vacancies through the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) was resorting to "adhocism" by appointing teachers on a contract basis.
Agarwal sought contempt proceedings against the MCD and the NCT officials saying the two agencies had failed to honour the directions given by a Division Bench earlier wherein the authorities were asked to fill up all vacancies through DSSSB by April 2003.
