Twenty-two labourers deployed by the Army have also been washed away at Gupuk, 12 km from Leh.

"We have received reports that they (army personnel) have gone missing. Till the bodies are recovered, we can’t (increase) the toll officially," Leh Deputy Commissioner T. Angchok said. The army personnel went missing on August 6.

The Army has pressed into operation 700 labourers, 1,000 soldiers, and JCB machines to clear the Srinagar-Leh highway.

"It depends on the weather and availability of resources," an Army official said.
