The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) on Sunday said there is no tsunami threat to the Indian mainland in view of a strong quake which hit Indonesia.
"There is no tsunami threat for Indian main land and Andaman and Nicobar Island regions," a scientist working with INCOIS told PTI.
High tides were witnessed in the sea for over three hours and it must have ceased by now, the scientist said, adding we can now say it is back to normal.
A powerful quake of 7.2 magnitude hit the Indonesian province of Aceh today, causing panic in the area that was devastated by the killer waves of the 2004 tsunami.
INCOIS will monitor the sea level gauges and report in case of a tsunami, the scientist said.
INCOIS, an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Earth Science, was set up to provide ocean information and advisory services through sustained ocean observations.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah, who was on a visit to Guntur district, reviewed the situation there in the wake of tsunami fears, a release from the Chief Minister's Office said.
