With the Samajwadi party coming to power in the state, six elevated road projects in the city initiated by the previous Mayawati government have been shelved.
Instead, the Noida authority has decided to construct underpasses and flyovers to ensure a signal-free ride on the jam-packed roads.
During the Mayawati-led BSP government, the authority had planned to construct a total of six elevated roads to provide a hassle-free ride to commuters. But the plan was shelved after the Samajwadi Party came to power.“Construction of elevated roads will cost huge funds.
An elevated road on a 4-km stretch between Mamura Chowk and NH-24 will cost R600 crore. We will provide a signal-free ride to commuters by constructing underpasses and flyovers with only R100 crore. This way, we will save a huge amount of money,” said Sanjeev Saran, chief executive officer (CEO), Noida Authority.
The authority had already prepared the detailed project report (DPR) of two of its elevated roads - from Vishwa Bharti School (Sector 28) to Shopprix Mall (Sector 61), and from DM residence (Sector 27) to Spice Mall (Sector 25A).
A study was also conducted by IIT Delhi and it had given its green signal to one of the elevated roads.“The authority spent a lot of money for the study and DPR preparation. Construction was supposed to begin shortly. But now we will again conduct a study and later the DPR for underpasses and flyovers,” said an official.Meanwhile, residents say the city’s traffic problem may prolong as the authority will start work afresh to make roads signal free. Also, Noida won’t get its first-ever elevated road.

{{/usCountry}}“Why should we waste money unnecessarily on elevated roads when underpasses and flyovers will provide seamless, signal-free connectivity at a cheaper price. Delhi has done the same on its Ring Road by constructing flyovers. We have scrapped all elevated road projects,” said the CEO.
