Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav criticised the Mulayam Singh regime for the Noida serial killings and though he did not demand imposition of President's Rule he called for a change of government in the state by holding early elections.
"President's Rule is no solution. The police and administration have failed miserably. It is high time we say goodbye to the UP government as soon as possible and have early elections," he said.
Alleging that the state administration and police had failed abysmally in maintaining law and order, the Bihar leader demanded "maximum possible punishment" for the guilty.
Lalu's reaction to the Nithari killings comes a day after Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan formally demanded a CBI inquiry into the killings, alleging that, according to the information it has received, the total number of killings were not 38 but 98.
There was no official word on whether Congress president Sonia Gandhi would go to Nithari but sources said that she is likely to visit the families of the victims.
