The Left on Tuesday rejected the 123 Indo-US civil nuclear agreement, saying it would tie India to an unequal deal that does not address many concerns.

The Left contended that the Henry Hyde Act, a domestic US law passed by the US Congress in December 2006, also binds the 123 deal. Under the Act, the US president has to annually report to Congress that India’s foreign policy is “congruent to that of the US and that India is joining US efforts in isolating and even sanctioning Iran,” the Left argued.

CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat said the Left would “press for a Constitutional amendment for bringing international treaties and certain bilateral agreements for approval in Parliament…”

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said: “I do not want to react. We will talk to them.”
