While Dr Jain had expressed the possibility of the girl being polio affected without waiting for the medical examination report, district CMO NK Sarraf has now come up with a new possibility that the child actually could be a patient with Acute Flaccid Paralysis (also known as West Nile Polio) (AFP).

The child Kajal was treated for six days at the district hospital where Dr Manish Jain had suspected polio, which directly raised questions on the polio campaign. Dr Sarraf said the child’s stool and urine tests had been sent to Mumbai and once the final report comes by February 11, things would be clear.

Dr Sarraf said Kajal could be suffering from AFP as she was responding to treatment at the district hospital, which would not have been so had she been a polio affected girl. Two such cases of AFP are reported every month on an average. Because symptoms of AFP are similar to polio, generally such patients are taken to be polio affected, he added.

Later Guna Collector Nitesh Vyas had issued orders ensuring free treatment for Kajal. Meanwhile, till Kajal’s final reports are received on February 11 from Mumbai, a fresh debate has sparked off on the proposed examination and on the pulse polio campaign.
