GANDHIGIRI IS growing and it’s just a click away now.
At least two websites are at present promoting this new avtar of Gandhism. Taking the lead is www.gandhigiri.org, a site launched by Suraj Jain, a 25-year-old teacher at Guwahati. The catch-line of the site is: “If Munnabhai can, why can’t we do Gandhigiri.”
Talking to Hindustan Times on phone from Guwahati, Suraj said he saw Lage Raho Munnabhai on September 2. The film motivated him so much that he decided to launch a website the same day.
Suraj admitted he did not know much about Gandhiji and his philosophy. He only remembered some references about the great man that he studied during his school days. Then Munnabhai happened.
The website received tremendous response, he said adding approximately over 600 members, including some senior professors and educationists from Mumbai and New Delhi, had got themselves registered with his website, which on an average received approximately 10,000 hits daily. Talking about his mission, he said ‘Mission Gandhigiri’ was a unique concept in itself. Since the idea had never been attempted on the net, he thought why not try it. Suraj said ‘Mission Gandhigiri’ provided a platform where one could extend his or her support for an issue or a cause. As it also sought user response, a general hype could be created on the issue involved, Suraj added. Eradicate child labour, false dowry cases, promise yourself to grow a tree near your house etc are some of the missions, the site managers propose to carry forward. The site also has stuffs like Gandhigiri forum for discussion, Gandhigiri directory to promote Gandhigiri related platforms, write-ups on Gandhigiri and Mission Gandhigiri.
Anybody could become part of these campaigns, said Suraj. The other site of Zaress Ahmed highlighting demonstrations and protests a la Gandhigiri is www.gandhigiri.co.in. Anything which highlights Gandhigiri is there on the web page.
