From Thursday, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) initiated the metered-system in the twin-cities of UP and has directed all new CNG-autos to be registered only if fitted with the meter systems.

The step, although already in vogue in neighbouring Delhi, would bring a sigh of relief to those who commute on city routes in overcrowded autos.

“No new autos in these cities would be registered without meters. Commuters can hire an auto individually or on a shared-basis. With this, we are trying to bring uniformity in the Delhi pattern,” said Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Lalji Chaudhary.

Residents have welcomed the move, provided there is strict compliance by a regulatory authority on a periodic basis. At present, there are around 3100 registered CNG-autos in Noida, 1000 in Greater Noida and 6734 autos in Ghaziabad city. RTO officials say within 3-4 months, the existing old CNG-autos would also be fitted with the meters and fares would be further revised after consultation with them.

“We will conduct a meeting with district officials to decide upon bringing in more autos,” Chaudhary said.
