The Commonwealth Games are barely two months away, but the bad news keeps pouring in for the sporting community.
On a day when Hockey India put the fate of former women’s coach M.K. Kaushik in the hands of the Sports Authority of India and Delhi police, another sport found itself in the limelight for all the wrong reasons.
The Indian Weightlifting Federation suspended SAI coach Ramesh Malhotra after Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari alleged sexual harassment by him on junior lifters.
Malhotra, who was recommended by the IWF for the Dronacharya Award for the last two years, has been relieved of his job at Bangalore SAI Centre.
“We’ve have suspended Malhotra with immediate effect and have relieved him for his coaching job with Common-wealth core group weightlifters at Bangalore SAI Centre,” IWF Secretary General Sahdev Yadav said.
A three-member panel headed by IWF vice-president Kumbasi Subramanyahas been asked to probe the matter and submit a report in seven days.
