Official sources in the DRI said, 64-year-old Harish Joshi, who hit headlines last year following his dramatic arrest by the agency from outside a posh apartment in Gurgaon, was sent to Tihar jail under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic (PIT) of NDPS Act, a non-bailable provision.

Under the PITNDPS, a person can be taken into custody for preventing him from committing illicit traffic in narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances.

A person can be held under the PITNDPS Act for a period of one year without any scope for bail even as his detention period can be extended further.

Sources said Joshi, the then chairman of Grimus group of companies which run several education institutes across the world and who was granted bail in the NDPS case against him by the High Court last month with certain movement restrictions, was booked under PITNDPS to prevent him from continuing with his alleged narcotics trade.
