Hours before home minister Rajnath Singh met with external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, defence minister Manohar Parrikar and national security adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval on Thursday, the NSA held a meeting with BSF chief DK Pathak and army chief Dalbir Singh, foreign secretary S Jaishankar and other stakeholders to chalk out the strategy on Pakistan.
“The morning meeting was at the official level and it was decided in the meeting that any firing from Pakistan will be dealt with equally effective response on the border. The decision was put before the home, external affairs and defence ministers in the evening and their approval was sought. The BSF chief separately met with home minister Rajnath Singh to apprise him on the situation at the border,” said a senior government official requesting anonymity.
Sources said the BSF on Wednesday tried to get in touch with Pakistani Rangers four times on the repeated ceasefire violation but didn’t get any response.
The latest developments come barely a week after Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan met in Russia breaking the deadlock and deciding to re-engage.
In Ufa, it was decided that the two director generals of military operations (DGMOs) will meet and hold structured talks to ease tensions along the Line of Control. Under the existing arrangement, the DGMOs speak over the hotline on Tuesdays. The two DGMOs held a rare meeting on December 24, 2013 when India confronted Pakistan over the killing of five Indian soldiers in the Poonch sector and the beheading of an Indian jawan in the Mendhar region in the same year.
