The stringent National Security Act (NSA) will be slapped on those involved in assaulting two police officers and torching a police outpost after being stopped from taking out a religious procession on Sunday, police said in Kanpur on Monday.
Eighteen people have been arrested in this connection and other members of Hindu outfits who were involved in the incident in Farrukhabad are being identified, Inspector General of Police, Kanpur zone, Bhanupratap Singh said, adding that they will be charged under the NSA.
He said that tussle was among police and Hindu organisations and not between two communities.
The situation is under control and senior officials are keeping a close vigil.
A group of 1,500-2,000 people attempted to take out a 'prabhat pheri' (morning procession) from Pandeshwarnath temple in Panda locality, despite a ban clamped by the local administration.
The police in a bid to avert communal tension used mild force but the agitated mob torched a police outpost in Palla area in Kanpur and indulged in heavy brick-batting, poice said.
Superintendent of Police R B Singh had said that total 30 people were arrested in this connection.
