The research team found that most of the cases with central or abdominal obesity had got this gene mutated. They came to the conclusion that this IL-6 gene could be another reason for infertility in women during their reproductive age.

Eighteen cases of IL-6 mutation under the study were found to have POS, which is a common heterogeneous disorder characterized by infertility and chronic ovulation problems.

“During the study, it was found that women with central obesity had maximum problem and cases of gene mutation were high in them. Gene mutation was found less in the cases of lean or controlled obesity,” said the project investigator Dr Vani Gupta.

“Women with POS are vulnerable to some other problems also. They may fall victim to the cardiovascular diseases, abnormal blood pressure or other related problems,” Dr Gupta said.
