Ravi Pratap Singh, junior engineer in Irrigation Department posted in Saryu Drainage Unit, Gonda was murdered on March 21.
The Engineers posted in various government departments are being attacked by contractors or gangsters. Reason: The contractors, who are hand in glove with and gangsters, are trying to grab the huge amount of money sanctioned by the government for various projects. It is proving to be a nightmare for the engineers as the gangsters and contractors are attacking them under political patronage to grab the contracts. As the aim of the gangsters and contractors is to make fast buck, the quality of work is bound to suffer. If the engineers send adverse report and stop their payment due to poor work, they (engineers) have to incur the wrath of gangsters.
Several times the engineers informed the senior officials about the threat they are facing and even lodged FIRs. But the officials did not take any action. As a result, the engineers had to pay a heavy price. Senior engineers, like LN Singh, Indu Bhusan, SC Rai, Masood Alam Siddiqui, SK Bajpai, Anwar Mehndi Rizvi, JC Bhaskar, PP Dutta, posted at different departments, were killed on duty.
A project manager of the UP Bridge Corporation SC Rai, who refused to work as per the diktats of the contractors, was shot dead in Ballia. Recently, an executive engineer Ramdev was killed in mysterious circumstances in the city.
General secretary of UP Engineers Association Akhtar Ali Farooqui said they informed the CM, Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Irrigation Minister about the increasing attack on the engineers. But the state government has taken no action, he said. “The association will take up the issue seriously. We will urge the government to provide security to the engineers who have been threatened and deputed at sensitive spots,” he said.
