Officials gear up to meet power demands

Having faced public outrage due to largescale power cuts during the summer months, authorities in the Capital are taking no chances in the festive season and have initiated special measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to Delhiites during Diwali.

"Starting today, we have put special people on duty during the peak evening hours at our sub-stations who will ensure that faults, if they occur, are addressed at the earliest," Transco Director SR Sethi said.

Peak demand in this season hovers around 3,500 MW. Though the demand is very less on Diwali day as the industries are closed, we have to ensure uninterrupted power supply as it is basically a festival of lights, he said.

Special maintenance teams have been formed, which will be on duty from 2-10 pm on the festival days, Sethi added.

On their part, Discoms would be using features like automation which not only detect local faults in time but also help in their early restoration, BSES sources said.

This reduces the fault restoration time to about an average of 45 minutes from three and a half hours taken earlier, they said.

Apart from this, the entire distribution network has been mapped including all grid stations, cables, transformers, poles, streetlights etc.

Since Diwali is the festival of lights, special care has been taken to ensure that streetlights are functioning properly, they said.

"An emergency team of linesmen would be on duty during the festive days beginning today and they have all been equipped with mobile phones so that they can attend to complaints quickly."
