A city court on Thursday allowed the Delhi Police to interrogate underworld don Abu Salem in a case registered in 2002 for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 5 crore from a Delhi-based contractor.
Salem was declared a proclaimed offender in the case in which five of his alleged syndicate members, including a woman, were arrested for threatening Ashok Gupta, a South Delhi contractor. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur allowed the Special Cell to quiz him after it moved an application about the case registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act.
Salem, who has to face trial in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case, is undergoing interrogation in the extortion case relating to businessman Rajat Nagrath. According to the Police, Salem threatened Ashok Gupta of Greater Kailash in 2002, and demanded Rs 5 crore as protection money. Salem, who is facing trial in eight cases in the country, was lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail.
