Chief minister Omar Abdullah discussed with the prime minister Manmohan Singh the army's decision to close the Pathribal encounter case. He said there was a pressing need for providing justice to the families of victims and punishment to the accused for "innocent" killings.
The CM had a meeting with the PM on his arrival in Jammu. The CM had earlier said that he would take up the matter of Pathribal encounter with the highest authorities.
The army on January 23 had decided to close the Pathribal alleged fake encounter, 2000. It said the evidence recorded could not establish a prime facie case against any of the accused persons but it was clearly established that it was a joint operation by the police and the army based on specific intelligence inputs.
Omar had expressed his disappointment over the decision.
Four days after the killing of 35 Sikhs at Chittisinghpura, the army had said it had killed five 'foreign terrorists' on March 26, 2000, at Pathribal in south Kashmir.
Five army personnel were indicted by the CBI in 2006 for staging the fake encounter while it gave a clean chit to the state police.

The CM also discussed the suspension of cross-LoC trade after the seizure of truckload of contraband drugs, which has come from PoK. Omar had said the arrested Pak truck driver was a criminal and doesn't enjoy any diplomatic immunity.
He stressed for an amicable resolution to the issue so that the important confidence-building measure (CBM) of trade across the LoC was not jeopardized.
The Pakistan had suspended the cross-LoC trade on January 17 after the arrest of the driver. It is also not allowing 27 Indian truck drivers to return to India.
The chief minister also apprised the prime minister of the achievements registered by the coalition government during the last five years in the state in various fields of socio-economic development.
Omar expressed his gratitude to the prime minister for his support to the state and wished him good health.
