Successful in staying away from controversies and equidistant from mainstream leaders and a section of separatists, the reappointment of governor N.N Vohra by President Pranab Mukherjee for a five-year tern was hailed by chief minister Omar Adullah on Sunday.
Describing it a “positive initiative in the interest of the state, Omar said, “His advice has always been fruitful and to the best interests of the people of the state.”
The chief minister expressed hope that Vohra would continue to guide the government during his second term and be instrumental in the goal of achieving permanent peace and prosperity in the state.
A former bureaucrat, 76-year-old NN Vohra was on Saturday reappointed as governor. He took office in 2008 amidst heightened tension in the wake of the Amarnath land row.
A Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said, "The President of India has been pleased to appoint Narinder Nath Vohra to be the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for a fresh term on the expiry of his present term".
An IAS officer from Punjab cadre, Vohra was first civilian person to take over the head of state. Earlier, mainly people from the intelligence and army background were assigned the top job of Jammu and Kashmir, which is reeling under two decade old insurgency.
