In a first-of-its-kind demand, city lawyers have sought fine relaxation for "petty" traffic violations, such as absence of all requisite vehicle papers, since "they are always in hurry" to reach the courts.
About 400-500 lawyers met Gurgaon police commissioner KK Sindhu on Thursday to talk about being treated "unfairly" by the city police despite the "gravity of their profession". They requested Sindhu to ensure that the district bar association president be taken into confidence before the police act against any advocate.
On being asked whether letting them off for petty violations would be unfair to the common man, district bar association president Kulbhushan Bhardwaj said, "Advocates normally wouldn't break the law since they are practitioners themselves. We just want the police to appreciate the sensitive nature of our work and cooperate."
The police commissioner later told HT that although the law will always be the priority, the city police would ensure noone is treated unfairly.
