Javaid Iqbal, a resident of Nowhatta area of the city, was injured in police action on protesters, official sources sources said in Srinagar.
He was declared 'brought dead' at the SMHS hospital.
Another youth was also injured as police tried to quell protesters there.
Hospital officials said that it was not clear yet whether the youth had died in firing or after being hit by a rubber bullet.
Sporadic protests occurred at several places in the city and normal life was paralysed by the strike call given by the Separatists' Coordination Committee demanding right to self determination.
