An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with police commandos in Imphal West district of Manipur, official sources said on Monday.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with police commandos in Imphal West district of Manipur, official sources said on Monday.

The commandos, attached to Imphal West district police, were frisking passers-by at Canchipur near Manipur university at around 8 pm on Sunday night when they detected some persons moving in a suspicious manner.

When asked to stop, the militants fired at the commandos and in the ensuing encounter one militant was killed on the spot. Some others escaped, the sources said.

One 9mm pistol and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the spot, the sources said.

Over 290 persons have so far been killed in militancy-related incidents in Manipur this year.
