To regulate the flow of Amarnath yatris, the government has decided to allow only 15,000 registered yatris per day on Pehlgam and Baltal routes in a day and there will be no on-the-spot registration at these points. The number has been fixed as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) framed on the directions of Supreme Court of India. The apex had last year taken serious note of the death of about 100 yatris and had directed the state government to formulate plan for safe yatra. The 55-day Amarnath yatra starts from June 28.
As part of its plan to streamline yatra, only three on-the-spot registration centres are being opened at Jammu railway station, Jammu Haat and Vaishno Dham. However, the on-the-spot registration will only be available for the dates when the number of registered yatris on that particular date is below 15,000.
According to the inspector general of police, Jammu Zone, the decision not to have the spot registration centres at Pehlgam and Baltal has been made taken to avoid the rush of unregistered pilgrims in anticipation. The administration has advised the yatris to registered themselves prior to under taking yatra. The information about number of yatris undertaking yatra on a particular date would be available on the website of Shri Amaranth Shrine Board.
The inspector general had advised all the functionaries of various departments, including police, traffic, tourism department from Lakhanpur to Jammu to make the yatris aware through public announcements, pamphlets, banners and display on LCD screens that unregistered yatris would not be allowed to go for yatra.
