It only took two-and-a-half months for things to come back to square one at the Garhakota Government Hospital. On Thursday, doctors at this state-run medical facility performed an autopsy in the open as staff members passed by nonchalantly.
HT had carried a story in July this year highlighting the plight of Bhagat Singh ward residents who, for over three years, had to witness autopsies conducted in open after the ward collapsed. Taking cognisance of the report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued notice to the state government after which the hospital authorities stopped conducting autopsies in the open.
However, on Thursday, autopsy of a local resident was conducted under the open sky by Dr SL Shakya and Dr Vikas Raj in the hospital premises.
The temporary shed that was erected in July for conducting autopsies after HT published the story was razed two or three days back by PWD personnel for construction of a new autopsy house, said PWD (SDO) Awinendra Singh. Though there are many vacant rooms in the hospital, the doctors preferred to do autopsy in the open.
Despite repeated attempts, Dr Shakya could not be contacted, though Rehli block medical officer Dr SM Srothia said the matter has just come to his attention and he would inquire into the matter. He said he would instruct Dr Shakya to make temporary arrangements to avoid such things. Chief medical and health officer Dr RC Jain said he had no information about the matter.
