"The results show that Parrikar has fooled the people and has not been able to do any of the things he had promised. He should resign immediately," president of state NCP and losing candidate from Panaji Wilfred D'souza told reporters in Panaji.

"Parrikar has only 19 BJP MLAs, the other five are non-BJP. Isn't it logical for them to stay with the Congress, which will in all likelihood form the next government at the Centre, instead of sticking with the BJP," D'souza said.

"We have to talk with our counterparts in the Congress to finalise a strategy, but it is clear that two things were necessary for the fall of the Parrikar government. One, he had to lose in one seat, and secondly, the government at the Centre had to change. Once the scenario at the Centre becomes clear, the scene in Goa too will change," D'souza said.

Expressing happiness that his party had managed to get over 88,000 votes, inspite of the fight being touted as one-sided, D'souza said this was indicative of the BJP's loosening hold on the Goan electorate."

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has called an emergency meeting of all ruling MLAs this afternoon.

In south Goa, GPCC president Luisinho Faleiro too has called for Parrikar's resignation, saying he has lost the moral right to rule.
