Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday said that the government will fill 1,000 vacancies in the police department this year to increase the force's strength.
Addressing the investiture ceremony of the Karnataka Police force in Bangalore, he said 1,136 vacancies in the department will be filled this year.
Emphasising the pivotal role played by police in ensuring good governance, Yeddyurappa said his government has provided the necessary funds and equipment needed for strengthening the police force.
He said seven new police stations will be established in Ramanagaram, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Bellary districts and 10 police outposts will be converted to regular police stations this year.
Steps have already been taken to promote 968 Police Constables to Head Constables and 290 Head Constables to Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Yeddyurappa said.
Earlier Home Minister V S Acharya, congratulating the awardees, said 50 new police stations will be etablished this year.
Highlighting the various measures taken by the government to ensure law and order, he said besides strengthening the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) in Karavali region, a police consulate has been established in Mangalore.
Apart from an increased allocation of Rs 250 crore for the police department in the recent state budget, the government proposes to build 4,331 houses for police personnel this year, Acharya said.
