The labourers who were freed after a government decision five years ago, were demonstrating for alternative employment, land and other facilities.

Their procession from Maitighar was stopped by police at Singhdurbar, the government secretariat.

Out of over 35,000 bonded labourers, or Kamaiyas, from ethnic Tharu communities in four districts of western Nepal who were freed by the government, around 19,000 are yet to get a piece of land as promised, according to officials.
