According to the organiser of the workshop, Professor R.P. Singh of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT-K, over 80 scientists from IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, Central Road Research Institute, Banaras Hindu University, Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, Punjab University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Indian Meteorological Department, New Delhi, Central Pollution Control Board, New Delhi, Panki power plant, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, National Physical Laboratory New Delhi and National Botanical Research Institute Lucknow, are expected to participate in the workshop.

Prof Singh said this would be for the first time that scientists of various disciplines working in the Indo-Gangetic plain would gather at the IIT- K to take account of the impact of the increasing aerosols and their impact on human health and natural resources and to decide about the steps to be taken to improve the environment of the Indo-Gangetic plain.

He said that the changing climatic conditions, especially during winter (because of dense fog) in the last seven years had prompted him to organise this workshop and conduct detailed studies on environmental pollutants.

Dr Singh said the main aim of the workshop was to bring scientists involved in various studies (observation, modelling and data analysis) on one platform to discuss the problems related to increasing aerosol loading and its impact on the natural resources and climate of the Indo-Gangetic plain. He said during winter, due to haze and smog, the life of 600 million people living in the Indo-Gangetic plain was affected.

The workshop is being sponsored by the India Meteorological Department and the Ministry of Earth Sciences which is one of the new Ministries. In this Workshop, invited papers will be presented by Indian and foreign scientists working in the field of aerosols and climate of the Indo-Gangetic plain.

Deliberations on a number of issues relating to pollution caused by transport, power plants, coal mining, forest fires and dust storms have been planned.
