The life imprisonment awarded to three policemen by a sessions court for killing two innocents in Kakawan, seems to be just a beginning. In the days to come, the Kanpur police may remain hard pressed to ‘save more men-in-khaki’ in court room battles. There are several cases of encounter in which the cops are officially named ‘killers’. HT brings you the encounters, promising to help nail the cops!
Rafiq Qureishi
Top gangster Rafiq was gunned down in police custody in Kidwai Nagar yard last June. The chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) in his inquiry clearly held the Kidwai Nagar police responsible for his death. He has asked the State government to recommend the case for investigation by the CBI or any other competent agency. The investigation raised several pertinent points on which the city police were silent. Though no decision has been taken yet, Rafiq’s family is making all out attempts to turn on the heat.
Jhurri Pasi
Shot dead in a whimsical way by SO Adil Rashid Khan and his team in Barra. The team, however, could not tamper with the evidence given by the Pasi family that established that Jhurri was picked up from his residence two days before he was killed. Snubbed by senior officers, the family approached ADG (special inquiry) SN Chak. The latter got the case investigated and ordered registration of a murder case. The case has reached the court room.
Four Bawarias
They were killed in a wild goose chase in Sachendi. Controversy rocked the encounter when the identities of the victims were established and it turned out that they were all close relatives, two of them being brothers. Above all, the Sachendi police couldn’t roll out a single criminal case against them. After inquiries at various levels, a murder case was registered against team leader SK Singh and eight others, with the Babupurwa police. The complainant in the case is Darab Singh whose nephews were killed in the encounter.
Santan Yadav
Just a week ago, this 15-year-old was killed when the police were engaged in a gunbattle with the Raju Kahar gang. The Ghatampur police later proudly showed him as one of gang members it had killed. But again it could not find a single criminal case against him, nor did it show any recovery of weapons from him at the encounter site. To top it all, the SP leaders took up the case and mounted adequate pressure on police authorities. DIG Daljit Chowdhary in his report, too found the encounter fishy. SHO MP Saloniya, SSI JP Bharti and seven others now stand as murder accused. All of them have been suspended as well.
Imran
Killed in Chakeri by SO Shyam Singh Yadav and his team. In fact, when the police picked him up from Unnao, the family members followed the cops to Shyam Nagar where he was peppered with bullets. A small time criminal, Imran was leading a peaceful life as a chappal maker. The family reported the matter to senior authorities and on investigation, the charges were found true. Yadav was removed and he, like the others, faces murder charge.
