This PROFESSOR of Economics Department, Lucknow University (LU), can truly be called an Oxford scholar based in Lucknow. He has been to Oxford University five times and next week he’s going back! Oxford is his second love as he has developed an emotional rapport with the centre of higher education over the last 12 years. Indeed, this achievement is a rarity amongst the professors of LU.
Prof Mohd Muzammil, however, keeps a low profile. He’s penned books on economics in three different languages—English, Hindi and Urdu
While recalling his visit to Oxford, the Professor says, “It dates back to 1994 when I went there as a visiting fellow in South Asian Visiting Scholarship Programme (SAVSP) at Queen Elizabeth House (QEH), Oxford University. That was a six-month programme and my work then, largely dealt with human development in South Asia. As a student of Economics, all I could say is that it was a good learning experience for me.”
Thereafter, he visited Oxford in 1998-99 as visiting scholar in Economics Department. In 2003, he presented a paper at the Oxford conference. Then, he was selected member of the India Research Team under the Research programme consortium of Cambridge University. Again in 2005, he went to Oxford to attend the conference on education and livelihood and the theme of his paper was labour market and outcome of education in India.
His social interaction was also rated highly at Oxford. He says: “Every weekend faculty members of Oxford assemble and they were fond of my shayari.” During his visit to UK, he was interviewed several times by BBC Radio Oxford and participated in many programmes of BBC Urdu Service, London.

{{/usCountry}}Not just electronic media, even newspapers like The Guardian and The Financial Times published a number of his articles and comments. Back home, this professor is preparing for his forthcoming visit. “I’m anxiously looking forward to this trip.
Some of the top economists of the world would attend these conferences. Let’s hope, I’m able to deliver the goods,” says the professor as he gets set to go.
