A Pakistani businessman about to board a flight to Delhi was detained at Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport late on Friday after seven cartridges were recovered from his baggage.
The man, identified as Sheikh Arif Mahmood, had reportedly crossed the Attari border in Punjab’s Amritsar district to reach India on Friday afternoon. He was handed over to the police, which registered a case against him under the arms act.
On Saturday, a local court sent him in judicial custody. “Vigilant authorities at the airport spotted the bullets, but it is yet to be seen how come they were not detected at Attari border,” station house officer (airport) sub-inspector Neeraj Kumar said. “Arif has told us that he has an arms licence in Pakistan and the bullets came in his luggage by mistake, but we have registered a case against him.” The businessman deals in sports goods, the police said.
