It surely could be the main reason why Pakistan’s legendary Imran Khan’s career as a cricketer looks complete. He led his team from a seemingly hopeless position to a World Cup triumph, defeating England in the final, in Melbourne 15 years ago.
In the filled to capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground, Imran won the toss and elected to bat.
Aamir Sohail was first to go caught by wicket keeper Alec Stewart. And Imran promoted himself up the order. The other opener Rameez Raja fell after four runs.
And it was left for the veterans Javed Miandad and Imran to salvage the innings. Both the experienced players began slowly adding crucial 139 runs for the third wicket.
The acceleration to Pakistan’s innings was provided by the partnership between young Inzamam-ul Haq and Wasim Akram. They added 52 runs in fewer balls.
Inzamam-ul Haq’s 42 came in 35 balls and Akram’s 33 from 19. Pakistan ended with a fighting total of 249.
England began disastrously. Ian Botham fell without scoring. The top-order failed to provide any decent platform. They were done in by some hostile pace bowling by Akram and Aaqib Javed.
Neil Fairbrother (67) and Alan Lamb (31) got a decent partnership but it did not make any difference in the end as the Englishmen were bowled out for 227.
