The authorities of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has recommended two new varieties of apple and seven varieties of mushroom for commercial cultivation in the state.
The decision to release these varieties was taken during a two-day state-level workshop on “Fruits and Floriculture” that concluded on the university campus on Thursday.
The workshop was organised by the directorate of extension education of the university in collaboration with the state department of horticulture in which 200 horticulture officers, progressive farmers and scientists of the university participated.
During the workshop, the research findings of the past seven to eight years were discussed and improved technology was finalised and recommended.
The scientists after thorough deliberations recommended new varieties of apple - Scarlet Spur - and peach variety - Suncrest and Masshoori variety of Nectarine - for commercial cultivation.
The techniques of nursery production of apple in one year were also recommended.
Technology for the management of insect pest and mites in apple were also discussed and recommended after discussion. The technology for the preparation of vermouth from wild apricot also recommended and accepted.
Seven new varieties of mushroom developed by the directorate of mushroom research (DMR), Solan, two belonging to button mushroom, namely DMR Button-3 and 06, and two of shitake mushroom - DMR Shitake-3 and 388 - were also recommended for cultivation in the state.
