The government has said terrorists could target nightlife hotspots and some markets, but industry people are worried it would just discourage tourists.

The administration, however, doesn’t want to take a chance. “Yes, these markets are vulnerable to attacks,” District Magistrate Mihir Vardhan told HT on Friday. At a review meeting in September, authorities had decided on a set of security and safety regulations for issuing licences to those organising the markets. “They have to have CCTVs in place. The parking lots have to be laid out and the entry and exit points have to be regulated properly,” Vardhan said.

Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande said the guidelines were not being followed. “They need to be complied with. As of now, these markets are a security hazard.”
