PG medical admissions: SC okays revised dates

The Supreme Court on Monday approved a revised time schedule for completion of admission process for Post Graduate Medical courses for academic year 2006-07.

This year admission was marred in a controversy following allegations of malpractices by some students in Chennai.

A Bench headed by Justice KG Balakrishnan, which had allowed counselling for successful candidates from April 21 for All India quota in postgraduate medical courses, accepted the revised schedule prepared by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which envisages completion of whole process of admission by June 30, 2006.

According to the new schedule, first round of counselling admission for the 50 per cent All India Quota would be done between April 21 and May 4 (including Sundays) while the same for State Quota would be over by May 30, 2006.

The last date for joining the allotted colleges and course for All India and State Quota would be May 19 and June respectively.

The Second round of counselling for allotment of seats for the all India Quota is scheduled to be over by May 26 while the same for the State quota has to be completed by June 13 this year.

The next academic session that is 2006-07 for students admitted under both All India and State Quota would commence on June 15, 2006, the court was informed.

However, students can be admitted against vacancies arising due to any reason till June 30 in both the categories.
