After evading the police for long, Rana resurfaced on a television interview saying he was ready to face any punishment, but does not want to return to his earlier abode as he feels unsafe there.

"I wish to lead a normal life like an ordinary citizen. I have said this earlier also. I want to join the mainstream," he said in an interview.

Maintaining that he was ready to face any punishment, he asked the Government to give him a chance.

"The Government has even given a chance to terrorists. Why can't I be given an opportunity, I have not betrayed the nation," he said.

"I know there are two cases against me. I know there will be punishment. I am ready to face them," Rana, who made a dramatic escape from the Tihar jail in February 2004, said.

"Some 83 policemen were transferred and 10 to 15 were suspended after my escape. The new Director General (prisons) had termed my escape a blot on Tihar. I can't go back there as I don't consider myself safe there," Rana said.
