The dry run for the Unique Identification number (UID) project , launched in two districts of Andhra Pradesh have been completed one month ahead of schedule. It is expected to speed up the process of launching the AADHAR cards by Nandan Nilekani led Unique Identification Number Authority (UINA).
The pilot project that started on April 10, covered over 25000 people in eight villages and two sub-urban centres in these two districts, during the exercise, project officials validated their software, devices and processes being used for the UID, official sources said. Chief Minister Mr. K Rosaiah expressed happiness over successful completion of 'Proof of Concept' pilot project in Medak and Krishna districts, by the UINA in run up to the issue of Unique Identification Number to all citizens of the country.
He thanked Nilekani for selecting two districts in the state for the for the pilot project and
successfully completing it.
Andhra Pradesh was chosen for the pilot because the Civil Supplies Department here has one of the most comprehensive databases in the country. The Chief Minister informed Nilekani that the state government had created a fool -proof integrated database 0f 82 million residents by using biometric technology during the 9 month long exercise to issue ration cards.Due to the use of the iris technology no duplication or bogus enumeration was possible. He said this database would come in handy for the UIDAI for the enrolment of all residents in Andhra Pradesh.
Rosaiah requested Nilekani to choose Andhra Pradesh as one of the pilot states for implementation of the scheme of issuing AADHAR on experimental basis. He said his government was keen to use the AADHAR to extend benefits of various schemes and services to everyone including people who have been disadvantaged for long such as marginal groups, migrants, women and children. The Chief Minister assured Nilekani that the government would extend all possible support and co-operation in making the project a grand success.
