A decision to the effect was taken at the commission's marathon day-long meeting with top Uttar Pradesh officials led by chief secretary Atul Kumar Gupta in New Delhi, an official spokesperson said.

Chief Minister Mayawati and Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia did not attend the meeting.

Disclosing this in Lucknow late on Thursday evening, an official Uttar Pradesh spokesman said: "The centre has also considered our demand for an additional central assistance of Rs 8,700 crore, of which Rs.4,000 crore has been approved forthwith."

For Uttar Pradesh's drought prone Bundelkhand region, the commission has agreed to include it under various special irrigation schemes which would be finalised by the union ministry of water resources, the official said.
