Jaiswal and the other passengers had already alighted from the plane when the fire broke out in the engine at 1214 hours, officials of Lal Bahadul Shastri Airport said.

The CISF personnel surrounded the aircraft as a security measure and two fire tenders were used to douse the flames within seven minutes, they said.

Jaiswal later left for Ghazipur district for electioneering in favour of Congress candidates.

A team of engineers repaired the engine of the plane which left for Khajuraho at 1258 hours, they said.

Jet Airways manager Anirudh Kumar Singh attributed the fire in the engine due to heating.
