It is the first time a major game has been forfeited because one side cannot raise an XI.

The match was cancelled on Friday night after Canadian officials informed tournament match referee Javagal Srinath in a meeting, also attended by Kenyan and Scottish team representatives, that their squad had been hit by an illness and were not in a position to field a full side.

At least five players were dignosed by a local doctor to be suffering from a viral stomach condition.

The Canadians arrived here on Monday after a 24-hour journey, and the difference in the conditions between the sub-zero temperatures at home and the intense heat of Kenya could have taken a toll. They also endured a long afternoon in the field on Thursday when they lost to Scotland.

There were also reports that some of the Kenyans were also unwell, but a spokesman of the hosts team denied that and said all 15 players were fit and ready to play.

The cancellation of the match was a big disappointment to the organisers who had been expecting a capacity crowd on a week-end day match.

At least 16 schools were expected to be busing in children to watch the match.

The forfeiture meant four points to Kenya - just as many points as a win - who extended their lead at the top of the table.

Kenya face Scotland in the fourth match on Sunday and organisers said that game would go ahead as scheduled.
