Condoling the loss of lives in the earthquake that hit Chile last weekend Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday pledged $5 million towards relief and rehabilitation measures.

"It is with profound sadness that I have learnt of the massive earthquake that hit Chile causing immense loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure across the country," Manmohan Singh said in a letter to President Michelle Bachelet.

"On behalf of the government and people of India, I would like to express deep sympathy and condolences to the people of Chile on this great tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the bereaved families."

The toll from the earthquake that devastated areas of central and southern Chile stood at 799, according to the latest figures released by the National Emergency Office, or Onemi.

Most of the fatalities occurred in the coastal region of Maule, where at least 587 people died.
