As the serial blast-hit city returned to normal on Monday, Manmohan Singh announced a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh for each of those killed on Saturday.
The Prime Minister announced the hike in compensation after his visits to three hospitals in the city on a rainy Monday afternoon.
Singh, who was accompanied by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and other Congress leaders, visited the Civil Hospital, L.G. Hospital and the Vadilal Hospital where the injured are being treated.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi accompanied the Singh to all these places.
The PM spoke to the injured and appreciated the resilience of the people against the acts of terror.
“These terrorist acts are aimed at destroying our social fabric, undermining communal harmony and demoralising our people,” the Prime Minister said in a statement before his departure to Delhi.
“As the people of Gujarat have shown admirably, these efforts would not succeed,” Singh said.
With two more injured persons dying overnight, the toll in the serial blasts rose to 52 till Monday evening.

{{/usCountry}}The southern city of Surat however was not so lucky as a live bomb was found in Ghanshyam Nagar of the Varachcha area in the afternoon. It was defused by the city police’s bomb disposal squad.
Surat remained tense throughout Monday, following Sunday’s recovery of explosives in cars with fake number plates.
Surat diamond markets remained closed for the day as a precautionary measure while primary schools declared a holiday. The bustling textile markets too closed early as part of the security measures.
