In a letter to Singh, the Association said the body should have independent constitutional powers and be capable of taking quick and firm decisions expeditiously on proposals for new colleges pending before the MCI.

Desai and three others were arrested by CBI last month in connection with a Rs two crore bribe for permitting a medical college in Punjab to admit students despite lack of infrastructure.
